Will WhatsApp Keep Working After Your SIM Is Deactivated? Here’s What Actually Happens

Many WhatsApp users assume that the app will immediately stop working if the SIM card linked to their mobile number is deactivated. In reality, WhatsApp does not necessarily stop functioning the moment a SIM becomes inactive.

If WhatsApp is already registered and working on your smartphone, you may be able to continue sending messages, making WhatsApp calls and using other features through Wi-Fi or an internet connection from another SIM.

However, keeping WhatsApp connected to a mobile number you no longer control can create an important account-security risk, particularly if the telecom operator eventually reallocates that number to somebody else.

So, how long can WhatsApp continue working after a SIM is deactivated? There isn't a simple answer such as 30, 60 or 90 days.

WhatsApp Does Not Immediately Stop When Your SIM Is Deactivated

WhatsApp uses your mobile number to register and identify your account, but an active SIM card does not have to provide the internet connection every time you use the app.

Once the account has been successfully registered on a device, WhatsApp primarily needs an internet connection to exchange messages and make calls.

For example, suppose the SIM associated with your WhatsApp number stops working, but your phone remains connected to Wi-Fi. WhatsApp may continue functioning on that device.

Similarly, if your smartphone contains another active SIM with mobile data, that connection can provide internet access while WhatsApp continues using the previously registered number.

This is why a deactivated SIM does not necessarily result in an immediate WhatsApp logout.

Is There a Fixed Number of Days?

There is no general rule stating that WhatsApp automatically stops exactly 30, 60 or 90 days after the associated SIM becomes inactive.

SIM deactivation and WhatsApp account inactivity are different issues.

As long as WhatsApp remains registered on your device and the account continues to be used through an internet connection, the app can continue working even though the original SIM is no longer providing cellular service.

However, WhatsApp has separate policies covering inactive accounts. Accounts that remain unused for an extended period can eventually be deleted under WhatsApp's inactivity rules.

That should not be confused with the date on which a telecom operator deactivates a SIM.

The Bigger Problem Starts When You Need OTP Verification

The real difficulty can arise when WhatsApp asks you to verify the mobile number again.

Suppose you buy a new smartphone and want to register your existing WhatsApp number on it. You may need access to the registered number to receive a verification code through an available verification method.

The same issue can arise after reinstalling WhatsApp or in other situations where fresh account registration or verification is required.

If the SIM has already been permanently deactivated and you no longer control that phone number, receiving the necessary verification code can become difficult or impossible.

This is why continuing to use WhatsApp with a discontinued number for a long period is not advisable.

What Happens If Your Old Number Is Given to Someone Else?

This is potentially the most important issue.

Telecom operators can eventually recycle inactive mobile numbers and issue them to new subscribers according to their policies and applicable regulations.

If your old number is later assigned to somebody else, that person becomes the legitimate subscriber of the phone number.

The new subscriber could then attempt to register that number with WhatsApp.

WhatsApp has protections designed to deal with recycled phone numbers, and a new holder of your old number does not automatically gain access to your historical WhatsApp conversations stored on your device. Nevertheless, losing control of the registered phone number can create complications for continued access to your account.

For this reason, users should not rely on the fact that WhatsApp is “still working” after their SIM has been disconnected.

Use Change Number Before Giving Up Your Old SIM

If you are permanently moving from one mobile number to another, WhatsApp's built-in Change Number feature is a safer approach than simply abandoning the old SIM while continuing to use the existing account.

On supported versions, you can generally find the feature by opening:

WhatsApp > Settings > Account > Change Number

The feature is designed to migrate WhatsApp account information associated with the old phone number to the new one.

You should ideally complete the process while you still have access to the relevant numbers and can meet WhatsApp's verification requirements.

Does WhatsApp Need the Same SIM to Access the Internet?

No. The internet connection itself does not normally have to come from the SIM associated with your WhatsApp number.

For example, WhatsApp registered with one mobile number can operate while your smartphone is connected to home Wi-Fi.

Similarly, mobile data supplied by another SIM can provide the internet connection.

The important distinction is that your registered phone number identifies your WhatsApp account, while Wi-Fi or mobile data provides the connectivity needed to use the service.

Don't Wait Until You Lose Access to the Number

If your SIM temporarily stops working because of a network issue, there is usually no reason to panic if WhatsApp remains registered on your phone.

A permanently discontinued number is different.

If you know you will no longer control your existing mobile number, update your WhatsApp account rather than waiting for the number to be disconnected and potentially reassigned.

In short, WhatsApp does not have a simple countdown that automatically begins the moment a SIM is deactivated. The app may continue working over Wi-Fi or another internet connection on an already registered device.

The more important question is whether you still control the phone number associated with the account. If the answer is no, moving WhatsApp to your new number promptly can help avoid verification and account-access problems later.
