Lost or Stolen Mobile Phone? Here’s How to File an Online Police Report and Block It Through Sanchar Saathi
Lost Mobile Phone Guide: Losing a smartphone can be more serious than simply losing an expensive device. Your phone may contain personal photos, contacts, emails, banking apps, UPI accounts and other sensitive information. Acting quickly can reduce the chances of misuse. In India, you can report a missing phone to the police and use the government's Sanchar Saathi service to block the device using its IMEI number.
First Step: Report the Lost or Stolen Mobile
If your phone has gone missing, start by reporting the incident. Depending on the circumstances and the services available in your state, you may be able to submit a lost-property complaint through the state police's online citizen-services portal or app.
The exact process varies from one state to another. Look for services such as Lost Article Report, Lost Property Report or Citizen Services on your state police's official portal.
If you believe the phone was stolen rather than simply misplaced, contact the police and follow the applicable procedure for reporting the theft.
What Information Should You Keep Ready?
Before submitting the complaint, collect as much information about the missing phone as possible. This will make it easier to correctly identify the device.
You may need details such as:
-
Your name, address and contact details
-
Mobile number used in the lost phone
-
Phone brand and model
-
IMEI number
-
Date and approximate time when the phone went missing
-
Location where it was lost or stolen
-
Purchase invoice, if available
-
Identity proof, where required
-
Police complaint/report details
The IMEI number is particularly important because it uniquely identifies the handset on mobile networks.
Where Can You Find Your Phone's IMEI Number?
If the phone is no longer with you, check its original box or purchase invoice. The IMEI number is commonly printed on the packaging and may also appear on the invoice.
Dual-SIM smartphones generally have two IMEI numbers. If your device has more than one IMEI, keep the details of both available while reporting the loss.
This is also a useful reminder to save your phone's IMEI details somewhere secure before anything goes wrong.
Save the Police Complaint or Acknowledgement
After submitting an online lost-property report, save the acknowledgement or complaint reference generated by the relevant police portal.
The format and legal status of an online lost-article report can differ by state and by the nature of the incident. Therefore, do not automatically assume that every online lost-property acknowledgement is the same as an FIR.
For theft, suspected crime or any situation requiring an FIR, follow the instructions provided by the local police.
Next, Block the Phone Through Sanchar Saathi
The Department of Telecommunications provides the Sanchar Saathi platform, which includes services for dealing with lost or stolen mobile phones.
Official Sanchar Saathi portal
Through its lost/stolen handset service, users can submit a request to block the IMEI of a missing phone.
Blocking the IMEI is different from merely blocking the SIM. A replacement SIM can protect your mobile number, while IMEI blocking is aimed at restricting the missing handset's use on Indian mobile networks.
How to Submit a Lost/Stolen Phone Blocking Request
Open the official Sanchar Saathi portal and choose the option related to blocking a lost or stolen mobile handset.
You will generally need to provide information about the lost device, the mobile connection and the incident. Police complaint details and supporting documents may also be required as part of the request.
Enter the information carefully, complete the required verification and submit the request. Save the request ID or acknowledgement generated after successful submission because you may need it later.
Don't Forget to Block the SIM
If your phone is lost or stolen, contact your telecom operator as soon as possible to block the SIM/eSIM associated with it.
This is important because a person who obtains the phone could potentially misuse incoming OTPs, calls or SMS messages if the SIM remains active.
You can subsequently request a replacement SIM from your telecom operator, subject to its verification requirements.
Secure Banking, UPI and Important Accounts
A lost phone can also expose digital accounts, especially if the device was unlocked or poorly protected.
Change passwords for important accounts such as your primary email and financial services where appropriate. Contact your bank or payment provider immediately if you notice suspicious transactions or believe your banking credentials may have been compromised.
You should also use the remote security features provided by your phone's operating system, where available, to locate, lock or erase the device.
What Happens If the Lost Phone Is Found Later?
Sanchar Saathi also provides a process for unblocking a recovered handset. Therefore, if the phone is returned or recovered after you have submitted an IMEI-blocking request, do not simply start using it again without checking its blocking status.
Use your earlier request details and follow the official unblocking procedure.
Lost Phone? Follow This Order of Action
A practical sequence is to secure the SIM and financial accounts, report the loss/theft to the police, obtain the required complaint details and submit an IMEI-blocking request through Sanchar Saathi.
Most importantly, use only official government and telecom channels. Avoid unknown websites claiming they can "track any phone using IMEI" or recover a lost handset after taking an online payment. Such claims can themselves be attempts to steal personal or financial information.
