ChatGPT Privacy Settings: Stop New Chats From Being Used for Training and Manage Your Data
ChatGPT is used for everything from writing emails and researching topics to analysing documents and solving everyday problems. But as people increasingly share information with AI tools, questions about privacy, conversation history and the use of personal data have become equally important.
If you use ChatGPT, you have controls over whether new conversations can be used to help improve OpenAI's models. You can also delete individual conversations, clear chat history and use Temporary Chat when you do not want a conversation to appear in your normal history.
The important distinction is that saving a conversation in your account and using that conversation for model improvement are not the same thing. Turning off model training does not automatically remove your existing chats from your history.
Here are the key ChatGPT privacy controls users should understand.
Turn Off 'Improve the Model for Everyone'
For users of personal ChatGPT accounts, OpenAI provides a setting called "Improve the model for everyone."
When enabled, content from eligible conversations may be used to help improve OpenAI's models. Users who do not want new conversations used for this purpose can disable the setting.
On the web version of ChatGPT, open your profile, select Settings, go to Data Controls, and switch off Improve the model for everyone.
Once disabled, new conversations can still appear in your chat history, but they will not be used to train ChatGPT.
The setting applies to the account, so users do not need to switch it off separately every time they move between supported devices.
Turning Off Training Does Not Delete Your Chats
This is one of the most important privacy details to understand.
Disabling Improve the model for everyone controls whether eligible new conversations are used for model improvement. It does not automatically erase conversations already stored in your account.
If you want to remove a particular conversation, you need to delete that chat separately.
In ChatGPT's conversation history, locate the chat you want to remove, open its options menu and select Delete.
According to OpenAI's current retention policy, a deleted conversation disappears from the user's chat history immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, unless it has already been de-identified and separated from the account or must be retained longer for security or legal reasons.
Want More Privacy? Use Temporary Chat
For conversations that you do not want included in normal chat history, ChatGPT also offers Temporary Chat.
Temporary conversations do not appear in regular chat history, do not create or use memories and are not used to train OpenAI's models.
OpenAI says Temporary Chats may still be retained for a limited period for safety purposes before deletion.
This option can be useful when a person wants a conversation to remain separate from their usual ChatGPT history.
Even when using Temporary Chat, however, users should avoid entering highly sensitive information unless it is genuinely necessary.
Chat History and AI Training Are Different Controls
A common misunderstanding is that turning off model training means ChatGPT will stop keeping conversations in the user's account.
That is not how the controls work.
You can keep normal chat history while preventing new conversations from being used for model training. This allows users to return to previous conversations without necessarily contributing eligible new chats to model improvement.
If you want a conversation removed from your account, it must be deleted separately.
How to Delete an Individual Chat
Deleting a conversation is straightforward.
Open your ChatGPT history and find the conversation you want to remove. Select the menu next to the chat and choose Delete. Confirm the action when prompted.
Deleted chats cannot normally be recovered through the ChatGPT interface.
Users should also understand the difference between deleting and archiving. Archiving a chat does not delete it. An archived conversation remains stored in the account but is moved away from the main conversation list.
Therefore, users who actually want a conversation removed should choose Delete rather than Archive.
Can You Delete All ChatGPT Conversations?
ChatGPT's Data Controls also provide options for managing multiple conversations.
Users who want to remove their entire conversation history can use the available Delete all chats option in Data Controls. This is substantially different from simply archiving conversations.
Because deletion is irreversible from the user interface, it is worth reviewing important conversations before clearing the entire history.
Users who want to retain a personal copy of their information can also explore ChatGPT's data-export option before deleting content.
What About Files Uploaded to ChatGPT?
Privacy controls are also relevant when users upload documents, images and other files.
OpenAI says content submitted to its individual consumer services may be used to improve model performance depending on the user's settings. This can include uploaded content.
Turning off Improve the model for everyone therefore matters to users who regularly work with documents or other information inside ChatGPT.
Files and chats can also be subject to different product storage and retention behaviour, so users should review the applicable controls rather than assuming deleting one item automatically removes everything associated with their account.
Memory Is a Separate Feature
ChatGPT's Memory functionality should also be distinguished from chat history and model training.
Memory can allow ChatGPT to use information from previous interactions to make future responses more relevant. Users can control Memory separately through the Personalization settings.
Therefore, someone reviewing their privacy preferences should consider three different areas: model training, conversation history and Memory.
Changing one of these settings does not necessarily produce the same effect as changing the others.
Be Careful About What You Share With Any AI Service
Privacy settings provide users with more control, but good digital habits remain important.
Avoid entering passwords, OTPs, UPI PINs, card PINs or other authentication credentials into an AI conversation. Users should also think carefully before sharing confidential business documents, highly sensitive personal records or information belonging to another person.
Before uploading sensitive material, check whether the information is actually required to get the answer you need.
Key ChatGPT Privacy Settings to Review
If you want greater control over your ChatGPT data, start with Settings > Data Controls and review whether Improve the model for everyone matches your preference.
Use Delete when you want to remove an existing conversation rather than merely hiding it through Archive. For conversations you do not want in your regular history, Temporary Chat provides an additional privacy option.
Most importantly, don't assume that ChatGPT privacy is controlled by a single switch. Training preferences, stored chat history, deletion and Memory are separate controls, and understanding the difference can help you choose the level of privacy that best fits how you use ChatGPT.
