Former India batter Wasim Jaffer believes KL Rahul possesses batting talent comparable to Virat Kohli but feels the wicketkeeper-batter has yet to fully realise his potential. According to Jaffer, the biggest difference between the two lies not in skill, but in mindset and consistency under pressure.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has praised KL Rahul's batting ability, describing him as one of the most naturally gifted players in Indian cricket. However, Jaffer believes Rahul has not converted his immense talent into the volume of runs many expected throughout his career.

Speaking about his experience of working with Rahul during his stint with the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Jaffer said the stylish batter has all the technical qualities required to dominate international cricket. Yet, he feels one crucial aspect separates Rahul from modern great Virat Kohli.

Jaffer Sees Rahul and Kohli as Equals in Talent

Having closely observed KL Rahul during their time together at Punjab Kings, Jaffer said the Indian batter has exceptional technique and possesses the ability to succeed across all three formats of the game.

According to the former opener, Rahul's batting quality is on par with Virat Kohli's. However, he added that raw talent alone does not determine greatness.

Jaffer believes Rahul has the capability to score significantly more runs for both India and his IPL franchise than he has managed so far.

Mindset Makes the Biggest Difference

While comparing Rahul with Kohli, Jaffer pointed to mental strength as the defining factor.

He explained that Virat Kohli's greatest advantage is his unwavering mindset and his ability to consistently deliver in high-pressure situations. According to Jaffer, that relentless hunger for runs and performances is what has allowed Kohli to establish himself among the world's leading batters.

Rahul, on the other hand, has often displayed elegance and technical excellence but has not consistently translated those qualities into match-winning performances over long periods.

Rahul Has Proven Himself Across Formats

KL Rahul made his international debut for India in December 2014 during the Melbourne Test against Australia. Since then, he has represented the country in Test cricket, One-Day Internationals, and T20 Internationals, becoming one of India's most versatile batters.

He is among the select group of Indian cricketers who have:

  • Captained India in all three international formats.

  • Scored centuries in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.

  • Performed multiple roles, including opening the batting and wicketkeeping.

Currently, Rahul continues to be a key member of India's Test side as an opening batter, while also serving as a wicketkeeper-batter in the ODI format.

Recent ODI Series Against England

Rahul's most recent ODI performances against England did not meet expectations.

He batted in the first and third matches of the series but managed scores of only 1 and 12, missing the opportunity to make a significant impact with the bat.

Those low scores have once again sparked discussions about Rahul's consistency, despite his unquestionable technical ability and experience at the highest level.

A Career of Promise with More to Achieve

Over the years, KL Rahul has earned praise for his elegant stroke play, adaptability, and calm temperament. He has delivered several memorable performances for India across formats and remains one of the country's most accomplished batters.

However, Jaffer's assessment suggests that Rahul's career still holds untapped potential. In his view, the difference between a highly talented player and a modern great lies in maintaining elite performances consistently over time.

While Rahul's skill level places him among India's finest batters, Jaffer believes that adopting the same relentless mindset and consistency that have defined Virat Kohli's career could help Rahul reach even greater heights in international cricket.
