CSK is searching for a new head coach after Stephen Fleming’s long association with the franchise ended. Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth believes Michael Hussey should take charge, but says MS Dhoni’s future role must first be clearly defined.

Chennai Super Kings could be heading towards one of their biggest transitions in IPL history. After Stephen Fleming’s long association with the five-time champions came to an end, attention has shifted to who will become the franchise’s next head coach.

Several high-profile names have been discussed as possible options, including former England captain Eoin Morgan and current England white-ball coach Brendon McCullum. However, former India opener and selector Kris Srikkanth believes CSK does not need to look outside its existing setup.

According to Srikkanth, current batting coach Michael Hussey could be the right person to succeed Fleming. At the same time, he believes CSK should first decide what role MS Dhoni will have going forward before finalising its new head coach.

Stephen Fleming Leaves Behind a Successful Legacy

Fleming’s departure marks the end of a remarkable era at Chennai Super Kings. The former New Zealand captain spent around 18 seasons with the franchise and played a major role in building CSK into one of the IPL’s most successful teams.

Under Fleming’s coaching, Chennai Super Kings won the IPL title five times. His long partnership with Dhoni became one of the defining features of CSK’s success, providing the franchise with continuity and a stable team culture.

Replacing such a long-serving coach will therefore be an important decision for the franchise.

Kris Srikkanth Backs Michael Hussey

Srikkanth has backed Michael Hussey to take over as CSK’s next head coach.

Hussey already understands the franchise’s structure and culture and has been associated with CSK for years, first as a player and later as part of its coaching staff.

Srikkanth believes this familiarity could make him a better option than bringing in someone from outside the franchise.

His argument is that CSK already has an experienced cricketing figure in Hussey who knows how the team operates and understands its players.

Eoin Morgan Not Srikkanth’s Preferred Choice

Eoin Morgan has also emerged as one of the names being discussed as a potential replacement for Fleming. However, Srikkanth does not favour the former England captain for the role.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth acknowledged Morgan’s achievements as a player and captain for England but questioned whether he would be the right fit as CSK’s head coach.

He also referred to Morgan’s stint as Kolkata Knight Riders captain and suggested that commentary would be a better role for him than coaching CSK.

Why MS Dhoni’s Role Has Become Important

The biggest question, according to Srikkanth, is not simply who replaces Fleming. It is what role MS Dhoni will play in CSK’s next phase.

Dhoni has been central to the franchise’s identity since the beginning of the IPL. His influence has extended beyond his role on the field, making clarity about his future particularly important while CSK restructures its coaching setup.

Srikkanth believes the franchise should first decide whether Dhoni will continue in his existing capacity or take on a different role in the team setup.

Once that is clear, choosing a head coach who can work within the new structure could become much easier.

Could Michael Hussey Be the Natural Successor?

Hussey could offer CSK something that an external candidate may not immediately possess—continuity.

Having spent considerable time inside the CSK setup, he is already familiar with the franchise’s working style and expectations. That could help the team navigate the transition following Fleming’s exit without completely changing its cricketing philosophy.

However, the final decision will rest with the franchise management.

For CSK, the upcoming appointment is about more than finding a new head coach. With Fleming’s long tenure ending and questions surrounding Dhoni’s future role, the franchise appears to be entering a new era. How CSK handles these two major decisions could shape the team’s direction in the coming IPL seasons.
