No Holiday Announced for Mumbai Schools

The BMC has confirmed that schools, colleges, and other educational institutions in Mumbai will operate normally today. Officials stated that no closure order has been issued, despite ongoing rainfall and weather warnings.

However, the situation is different in Palghar district, where the district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions after the IMD issued a Red Alert for the area due to the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall.

Why Schools Are Open Despite the Weather Alert

According to the BMC, educational institutions in Mumbai are generally closed only when the IMD issues a Red Alert, indicating an increased risk of exceptionally heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

A Red Alert typically warns of rainfall exceeding 204 mm within 24 hours, along with the possibility of severe disruption to normal life.

Since Mumbai is currently under a Yellow Alert, authorities believe that while rainfall may continue, conditions are not expected to reach the level that would require schools and colleges to remain closed.

The IMD has issued the following alerts for the region:

• Mumbai: Yellow Alert

• Thane: Orange Alert

The weather department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across several coastal districts over the next 24 hours.

Officials have also indicated that intermittent heavy showers are likely to continue in Mumbai until Friday, July 24.

According to IMD data, rainfall recorded during the previous 24-hour period showed varying intensity across different parts of Mumbai.

Rainfall totals included:

• Mumbai City: 36.65 mm

• Eastern Suburbs: 48.70 mm

• Western Suburbs: 64.91 mm

The western suburbs recorded the highest rainfall during the reporting period.
