Bank customers planning to visit a branch on Monday, September 21, 2026, should check the local holiday schedule before leaving home. Banks will remain closed at selected banking centres in Assam and Kerala due to regional observances, while branches across most other parts of India are expected to operate normally.

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar, the closures apply to designated banking centres and are not a nationwide bank holiday. Customers in the affected locations should postpone branch-dependent work or use digital banking facilities wherever possible.

Where Will Banks Remain Closed on September 21?

Bank branches will remain closed in Guwahati, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. The holiday has been declared for two separate regional occasions:

He played a major role in promoting the Ekasarana devotional tradition in Assam. His teachings emphasised devotion, social unity and spiritual equality. Religious gatherings, cultural programmes and other commemorative events are organised in different parts of the state to mark the occasion.

Because of the regional importance of the observance, September 21 has been included as a bank holiday for the Guwahati banking centre.

Reason for the Bank Holiday in Kerala

Branches in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram will remain closed on account of Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day. Sree Narayana Guru was a spiritual leader and social reformer who campaigned against caste discrimination and promoted the values of equality, dignity and education.

His final resting place is located at the Sivagiri Mutt in Varkala, Kerala. Followers observe the day in his memory through prayers, commemorative programmes and spiritual gatherings.

The RBI calendar lists the occasion as a holiday for the concerned banking centres in Kerala.
