The upcoming romantic-comedy anime Now That We Draw has received a major update ahead of its television debut. The series is officially scheduled to begin broadcasting in January 2027, with a newly released trailer offering fans another look at its two aspiring high-school manga creators.

Along with the premiere window and trailer, the production team has unveiled new character visuals featuring the story's central duo, Yuuki Uehara and Niina Miyamoto.

Based on the manga written by Kyu Takahata and illustrated by Yuwji Kaba, Now That We Draw mixes romance, comedy and manga creation as two inexperienced teenagers attempt to improve their stories by learning about relationships firsthand.

What Is Now That We Draw About?

At the centre of the story is high-school student Yuuki Uehara, an aspiring manga creator with a very specific idea of what his perfect romantic-comedy heroine should be like.

Yuuki imagines an innocent, shy and somewhat absent-minded girl who perfectly fits his idealised vision of romance.

Unfortunately, his fictional romance does not impress an editor at the publisher he dreams of working with.

The editor criticises Yuuki's manga for being clichéd and lacking realism. The rejection hits the aspiring artist hard and leaves him questioning his ability to write a convincing romantic story.

That's when his classmate Niina Miyamoto enters the picture.

Niina Has the Same Manga Problem

Niina may appear very different from Yuuki, but she shares his ambition of becoming a manga artist.

She has also encountered a surprisingly similar problem with her work.

Despite their attempts to write romance, neither Yuuki nor Niina has enough personal experience to make their fictional relationships feel convincing.

Niina eventually comes up with an unusual solution: the two should pretend to be in a romantic relationship.

The idea is that experiencing something resembling romance themselves could give them the material and emotional understanding they need to improve their manga.

Of course, their plan quickly proves more complicated than expected.

A Fake Relationship Becomes a Manga Experiment

Yuuki's expectations about romance have largely been shaped by the fictional heroine he created, while Niina has her own ideas about what a romantic male lead should be.

Neither teenager resembles the other's imagined perfect character.

Their personalities clash, misunderstandings pile up and their attempt at a fake relationship produces plenty of awkward situations.

That disconnect forms much of the comedy behind Now That We Draw.

Instead of simply presenting a conventional high-school romance, the story uses the pair's ambitions as manga creators to explore how fictional expectations compare with actual relationships.

Their experiment could ultimately help them create better manga—or turn their already complicated school lives into an even bigger mess.

Ayumu Murase and Sayumi Suzushiro Lead the Cast

Two established voice actors will bring the central characters to life.

Ayumu Murase has been cast as Yuuki Uehara, while Sayumi Suzushiro will voice Niina Miyamoto.

Their performances will be particularly important to the adaptation, as much of the series revolves around the chemistry, awkward interactions and contrasting personalities of its two leads.

Blue Lock Movie Director Leads the Anime

The anime adaptation is being directed by Shunsuke Ishikawa, whose previous credits include Blue Lock The Movie -Episode Nagi-.

Deko Akao is responsible for series composition. Akao's credits include May I Ask for One Final Thing?

Character designs are being handled by Hiromi Nakagawa, known for work on titles including Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence and WATATEN!: an Angel Flew Down to Me.

Now That We Draw originated as a manga written by Kyu Takahata and illustrated by Yuwji Kaba.
