Silver ETF Returns: Silver has attracted renewed investor attention after a sharp movement in prices across domestic and international markets. The rally has also reflected in silver exchange-traded funds (ETFs), with several schemes posting returns of more than 6% over the past month.

According to ACE MF data as of August 14, ICICI Prudential Silver ETF topped the list among the selected large silver ETFs, delivering a one-month return of 6.4%. Kotak Silver ETF, Aditya Birla Sun Life Silver ETF, Nippon India Silver ETF and Axis Silver ETF followed closely.

The comparison includes schemes with assets under management (AUM) of at least ₹1,500 crore.

ICICI Prudential Silver ETF 6.4% ₹13,700.8 crore
Kotak Silver ETF 6.3% ₹3,375.6 crore
Aditya Birla Sun Life Silver ETF 6.3% ₹2,756.3 crore
Nippon India Silver ETF 6.3% ₹29,499.4 crore
Axis Silver ETF 6.3% ₹1,854.6 crore

Among these schemes, Nippon India Silver ETF has the largest corpus, with an AUM of approximately ₹29,499.4 crore.

1. ICICI Prudential Silver ETF

ICICI Prudential Silver ETF led the selected category with a 6.4% return over one month.

Its AUM stood at around ₹13,700.8 crore. According to the data cited, the fund recorded a negative return of around 18.6% over three months and was down approximately 5.3% over six months.

However, its longer-term numbers were considerably stronger, with a reported return of 100.4% over one year and 47.6% over three years.

These figures also demonstrate why investors should not evaluate an ETF solely on its latest monthly performance.

2. Kotak Silver ETF

Kotak Silver ETF delivered approximately 6.3% over the past month, putting it just behind ICICI Prudential Silver ETF.

The scheme had an AUM of around ₹3,375.6 crore.

According to the cited data, its three-month return was approximately -18.6%, while the six-month return was around -5.3%.

Over longer periods, the ETF generated a reported 100.1% return over one year and 47.4% over three years.

3. Aditya Birla Sun Life Silver ETF

Aditya Birla Sun Life Silver ETF also generated a 6.3% return in one month.

The scheme reportedly declined about 18.5% over three months and 5.2% over six months. However, its one-year return stood at approximately 100.2%, while the three-year return was around 47.3%.

The contrasting short- and long-term numbers highlight the high volatility that can occur in precious-metal investments.

4. Nippon India Silver ETF

What makes this scheme particularly notable in the comparison is its size. Its AUM stood at around ₹29,499.4 crore, the highest among the five ETFs included in the list.

According to the cited data, the fund posted a negative return of around 18.6% over three months and about 5.2% negative return over six months.

Performance Across Different Periods

Looking only at one-month performance can give an incomplete picture. Here is how the five selected ETFs performed across different periods based on the figures provided:

Silver ETF 1 Month 3 Months 6 Months 1 Year 3 Years
ICICI Prudential Silver ETF 6.4% -18.6% -5.3% 100.4% 47.6%
Kotak Silver ETF 6.3% -18.6% -5.3% 100.1% 47.4%
Aditya Birla Sun Life Silver ETF 6.3% -18.5% -5.2% 100.2% 47.3%
Nippon India Silver ETF 6.3% -18.6% -5.2% 99.7% 47.2%
Axis Silver ETF 6.3% -18.56% -5.2% 99.8% 47.2%

The data shows why recent performance should not be treated as the sole basis for choosing an ETF. A scheme that leads over one month may not necessarily perform best over every investment horizon.

What Is a Silver ETF?

A Silver ETF is an exchange-traded fund designed to provide investors with exposure to silver without requiring them to purchase and store physical silver themselves.

Units of these ETFs are traded on stock exchanges, much like shares. Their performance is primarily linked to movements in the underlying price of silver, subject to expenses and tracking differences.

For investors, this can provide a relatively convenient way to gain exposure to silver while avoiding concerns such as physical storage, purity verification and security associated with holding silver bars or coins.

However, Silver ETFs are market-linked investments, and their value can rise or fall sharply with silver prices.

Don't Pick an ETF Based Only on Returns

The highest recent return does not automatically make a fund the best investment.

Before choosing a Silver ETF, investors may want to compare factors such as the expense ratio, tracking error or tracking difference, trading liquidity, bid-ask spread, AUM and the fund's ability to closely follow its underlying benchmark.

Silver itself can also be highly volatile. Global economic conditions, industrial demand, currency movements, interest-rate expectations and changes in precious-metal prices can significantly affect returns.

Therefore, Silver ETFs are generally better evaluated as one component of a diversified portfolio rather than as a guaranteed route to high returns.
