New Electricity Connection in UP: Apply Online From Home Through UPPCL’s Jhatpat Portal
Getting a new electricity connection in Uttar Pradesh no longer requires repeated visits to a local power office. Residents can submit an application from a mobile phone or computer through the Jhatpat Portal operated by Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited.
The online platform allows applicants to register, select a connection category, provide property and personal details, upload supporting documents and pay the applicable charges digitally. The progress of the application can also be monitored online.
Although most of the application process can be completed from home, the connection is not issued instantly. UPPCL or the relevant electricity distribution company must still verify the documents, examine technical feasibility and complete meter-installation formalities.
What is the UPPCL Jhatpat Portal?
Jhatpat is UPPCL’s digital platform for new electricity-connection applications. It is designed to reduce paperwork, improve transparency and minimise the need for consumers to visit electricity offices.
The portal can be used for eligible permanent and temporary connections. Applicants must select the correct connection category and sanctioned load based on the intended use of electricity.
A household generally needs a domestic connection, while a shop, office or business premises may require a commercial connection. Temporary connections may be appropriate for construction work, events or premises that are not yet eligible for a permanent supply.
UPPCL has advised applicants to use its official Jhatpat website to submit new-connection requests. The official address shared by the corporation is jhatpatportal.uppcl.org.
What should you prepare before applying?
Applicants should keep an active mobile number and readable digital copies of the required documents ready. The exact document list can vary according to the connection category, ownership status, requested load and location.
Commonly requested documents may include:
-
Aadhaar or another accepted identity document
-
Recent passport-size photograph
-
Proof of ownership or lawful occupancy
-
Property registry, allotment letter or house-tax receipt
-
Rent or lease agreement for a tenant
-
No-objection certificate from the owner, where required
-
Address details of the premises
-
Electricity-load requirement
-
Wiring or installation certificate, if applicable
-
BPL card when applying under an eligible BPL category
-
Other declarations requested by the distribution company
Aadhaar alone may not be sufficient in every case. The applicant may also need to establish the right to occupy the premises and provide additional documents according to the connection type.
Tenants should check whether the portal requires the owner’s consent, an indemnity bond or another occupancy document before submitting the application.
How to apply for a new connection online
The general online application process can be completed through the following steps:
1. Visit the official portal
Open the official UPPCL Jhatpat Portal on a mobile phone or computer. Avoid links received from unknown senders, advertisements or unofficial agents.
2. Complete applicant registration
Select the new registration option and enter the requested personal details, mobile number and email address, where applicable. Complete OTP verification to create login credentials.
3. Start a new-connection application
After signing in, select the option to apply for a new electricity connection. Choose the appropriate distribution company, district, division and subdivision for the premises.
4. Select the connection category
Specify whether the connection is domestic, commercial, temporary or another eligible category. Enter the required load carefully.
The requested load should reflect the expected use of appliances and equipment. Selecting an unrealistically low load could create problems after the connection is activated.
5. Enter property and address information
Provide the complete address of the premises, nearby landmark and other information requested by the portal. Details should match the uploaded property or occupancy documents.
6. Upload the documents
Upload clear and valid copies of the required identity, address and property records. Blurred, incomplete or expired documents can result in an objection or delay.
7. Submit the form and pay the fee
Review every entry before submitting the application. Pay the registration or processing charge through the payment options available on the portal.
Keep the digital receipt and application number safely. Additional estimated costs may become payable after the distribution company examines the application and determines the work required.
What happens after the application is submitted?
Once the form has been submitted, officials from the relevant electricity distribution company review the information and supporting records.
A technical inspection may be conducted to check whether electricity infrastructure is available near the premises, whether the requested load can be supplied and what equipment or line work is needed.
The applicant may then receive an estimate containing charges for the connection, meter, security deposit or infrastructure work, depending on the applicable rules. Payment can generally be completed through the designated online system.
After the requirements are fulfilled, the distribution company schedules meter installation and energises the connection. The time taken depends on document completeness, technical feasibility, availability of the distribution network and whether new poles, cables or other infrastructure are required.
UPPCL also operates a dedicated online system for private tube-well connections. That portal allows eligible applicants to pay the processing fee and estimated cost, select dates for site inspection and meter installation, and receive application updates. UPPCL private tube-well portal
Track the application and respond to objections
Applicants should regularly check the portal dashboard and monitor SMS messages sent to the registered mobile number. If an officer raises an objection or asks for another document, the response should be submitted within the permitted period.
Applications may be delayed or rejected when:
-
Property details do not match the documents
-
The wrong connection category is selected
-
A tenant fails to provide the required consent
-
Uploaded documents are unreadable
-
Previous electricity dues are linked to the premises
-
A permanent connection is requested for an ineligible site
-
The applicant does not respond to a departmental query
-
The required charges remain unpaid
Keeping the application number and payment receipts makes it easier to follow up with the department.
Do you need to pay an agent?
No private agent is required merely to submit an online application. Consumers can complete the process themselves through the official portal.
Applicants should never transfer money to an individual claiming to guarantee immediate approval or meter installation. Payments should be made only through the official portal or another channel authorised by UPPCL.
For connection-related assistance, consumers can contact the official electricity helpline at 1912. UPPCL’s Ease of Doing Business portal also lists a support number for eligible new-connection applications. UPPCL Ease of Doing Business portal
The Jhatpat system makes applying for a new electricity connection more convenient, but applicants must still provide accurate records and complete the technical and payment requirements. Checking the application regularly and responding quickly to any objection can help avoid unnecessary delays.
