What's Happening to Gold in the International Market?
International gold prices remained at elevated levels. Spot gold was quoted at around $4,379.9 per ounce.
Despite the decline seen in domestic prices on Monday morning, international gold had gained around 0.9% over the previous week.
Global gold prices can be influenced by several factors, including movements in the US dollar, interest-rate expectations, bond yields, inflation expectations, central-bank activity and geopolitical developments.
Domestic prices are additionally affected by the rupee-dollar exchange rate, import-related costs, taxes and local demand.
Silver Price Also Declines
Silver also witnessed some weakness on August 17. The domestic price was reported at around ₹2,49,900 per kilogram in the morning.
Despite Monday's decline, silver had gained around ₹5,000 per kilogram during the previous week.
In the international market, spot silver was quoted at around $64.88 per ounce.
Gold Imports Rise, Silver Imports Decline
According to Commerce Ministry data cited in the report, India's gold imports increased 4.77% to $4.16 billion in July.
Silver imports, meanwhile, fell sharply by 66.1% to $171.6 million during the period.
The report attributed the changing import trend partly to higher customs duty on precious metals, stating that the duty was increased from 6% to 15% from May 13.
