EPFO Nomination Rules: Who Can Claim Your PF, Pension and Insurance Benefits After Your Death?

If you are a salaried employee with an Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) account, adding a nominee is an important part of managing your retirement savings. Equally important is keeping those details updated whenever your family circumstances change.

Marriage, the birth of a child or another major change in the family can make it necessary to review the nomination already recorded in your EPFO account. Updated information can make it easier for eligible beneficiaries to deal with claims relating to provident fund savings, pension benefits and insurance if the EPF member dies.

Many employees complete nomination details when they first start working and then forget about them for years. However, a nomination made when a person was unmarried may need to be changed after marriage.

Understanding the e-nomination rules can therefore prevent unnecessary complications for family members later.

Who Can You Nominate for Your EPF Money?

The nomination rules depend on whether an EPF member has a family as defined under the applicable scheme.

When an employee has eligible family members, the nomination is generally required to be made in favour of eligible members of that family. For married employees, relevant details of the spouse and children should therefore be correctly entered in EPFO records.

The rules are different for a member who does not have a family when the nomination is submitted. Such a member can nominate another person, subject to the applicable EPF provisions.

However, this situation can change after marriage.

When a member who previously had no family later acquires a family, an earlier nomination made in favour of someone outside the newly constituted family may cease to remain valid under the applicable rules. A fresh nomination should then be filed.

This is why employees who completed their EPF nomination while unmarried should review it after getting married.

Why Updating Nomination After Marriage Matters

Consider an employee who nominated a parent or another person when joining a company while unmarried. If the employee later gets married but never updates the nomination, relying solely on the old information could create difficulties when benefits eventually need to be claimed.

Marriage changes the member's family status for the purposes of the applicable EPF nomination provisions.

Similarly, after children are born, employees should review their family information and make sure eligible family members have been correctly added to their records.

Updating e-nomination is therefore not something that should be treated as a one-time exercise at the beginning of employment.

EPF Is Not the Only Benefit to Consider

Employees often associate EPFO only with the money accumulated in their provident fund account. However, the broader framework can also involve benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI).

EPS provides pension-related benefits subject to the scheme's eligibility requirements, while EDLI provides insurance benefits in eligible cases involving the death of a covered employee.

Family information is important when determining applicable benefits under these schemes.

For EPS purposes, information relating to eligible family members, including the spouse and children where applicable, needs to be correctly recorded. EPF nomination is also relevant to EDLI-related claims under the applicable provisions.

Therefore, incorrect or outdated family information could create additional complications beyond the employee's EPF balance alone.

How to Submit EPFO E-Nomination Online

EPFO provides an online facility through which eligible members can add or update nomination information.

To complete the process, members can generally follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to the EPFO Member Portal using your UAN and password.

  2. Open the Manage menu and select E-Nomination.

  3. Review the personal information displayed on the portal and ensure it is accurate.

  4. Enter or update the required family details.

  5. Add eligible nominees and provide the requested information, including their name, date of birth, relationship, Aadhaar details and address.

  6. If a nominee is a minor, enter the required details of the guardian.

  7. Select the nominee and specify the percentage share of the EPF amount.

  8. If you add multiple nominees, allocate the shares so that the combined distribution equals 100%.

  9. Save the family and nomination details.

  10. Complete the prescribed Aadhaar-based e-sign authentication.

  11. Enter the OTP received on the mobile number linked with Aadhaar.

  12. After completing the process, check the Nomination History section to verify its status.

Members should carefully review all information before submitting it because errors in Aadhaar numbers, dates of birth, names or relationships can create problems later.

E-Sign Is an Important Part of E-Nomination

A common mistake is assuming that the nomination has been completed as soon as the nominee's information is entered and saved.

That may not be enough.

The online process requires the prescribed authentication to be completed. Aadhaar-based e-sign is an important final step for validating the nomination.

If the member enters all the required family and nominee details but does not successfully complete the e-sign process, the nomination may remain incomplete.

After authentication, members should check their Nomination History rather than simply closing the portal. This provides an additional opportunity to confirm that the nomination was successfully submitted.

What If There Is More Than One Nominee?

EPF members can allocate their eligible provident fund benefit among more than one nominee where permitted under the applicable rules.

In such cases, the member needs to specify how much each nominee should receive.

For example, instead of assigning the entire eligible amount to one person, the member can allocate different percentage shares among eligible nominees. The important requirement is that the combined allocation should total 100%.

Members should make this decision carefully and ensure that the distribution shown in their EPFO records reflects their current family situation.

When Should You Review Your EPFO Nomination?

Employees should review their nomination whenever a major family change occurs, particularly after marriage or the birth of a child. It is also sensible to periodically check whether personal and family details recorded with EPFO remain accurate.

An old nomination should not automatically be assumed to remain appropriate throughout an employee's working life.

The purpose of keeping e-nomination updated is to make the member's records consistent with the applicable EPFO rules and current family circumstances.

Why EPFO E-Nomination Should Not Be Ignored

Nomination becomes particularly important when an EPF member dies and eligible beneficiaries need to claim benefits.

At that stage, family members may have to deal with the member's PF accumulation, applicable pension benefits and EDLI insurance claim. Correct and updated records can help make the claim process clearer and reduce avoidable documentation issues.

EPF members should therefore check not only whether a nominee has been added but also whether the nomination reflects their current family status and has been successfully authenticated through e-sign.

If you submitted a nomination years ago and have since married or had children, reviewing your EPFO account now can help ensure that your provident fund records are up to date.
