CNG users in Delhi and the National Capital Region are facing another increase in their daily travel costs. Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has raised the price of Compressed Natural Gas once again, with CNG becoming ₹3.89 more expensive in Delhi.

The latest revision adds to a series of CNG price increases witnessed by consumers over the past few months. For people who switched to CNG because of its traditionally lower running costs compared with petrol and diesel, repeated hikes could put additional pressure on monthly transportation budgets.

The increase is particularly important for commercial drivers, including cab and auto-rickshaw operators, who consume considerably more fuel than an average private vehicle owner. A substantial rise in CNG prices over a relatively short period can directly increase their daily operating expenses.

CNG Becomes ₹3.89 Costlier in Delhi

According to the latest revision, IGL has increased CNG prices in Delhi by ₹3.89. The new hike comes amid broader pressure on energy supplies and fuel costs linked to geopolitical tensions involving Iran and the United States.

The impact of the ongoing situation has not remained limited to petrol and diesel. Gas and other energy markets have also faced uncertainty, creating challenges for countries dependent on energy imports.

CNG Prices Have Increased Several Times in Four Months

The August 29 increase is not the first CNG price revision faced by Delhi-NCR consumers this year.

CNG has reportedly become nearly ₹10 more expensive over the past four months. During this period, prices in Delhi-NCR have been increased five times, showing how rapidly the cost environment has changed for CNG vehicle owners.

Frequent revisions can have a bigger cumulative impact than a single price increase. Even when individual hikes appear relatively modest, repeated increases over a few weeks or months can significantly change the cost of running a vehicle.

The latest ₹3.89 hike therefore comes on top of several earlier revisions.

CNG Price Hikes Began in May

The recent cycle of CNG price increases began in May.

The first hike following the escalation of geopolitical tensions was announced on May 15, when IGL increased CNG prices by ₹2.

Further revisions followed in quick succession. Prices were raised again on May 17, May 23 and May 26.

Between May 17 and May 26 alone—a period of just 10 days—CNG prices increased by a combined ₹6. This rapid series of revisions significantly raised fuel expenses for motorists dependent on CNG.

With another ₹3.89 increase announced now, Delhi-NCR consumers are once again having to reassess their daily commuting costs.

Why Higher CNG Prices Matter for Commercial Drivers

The financial impact of rising CNG prices can be particularly significant for taxis, auto-rickshaws and other commercial vehicles.

Suppose a commercial vehicle consumes 10 kg of CNG in a day. A ₹3.89 increase per kg would raise its daily fuel expense by approximately ₹38.90, assuming the same level of consumption.

Over 30 days, that difference alone could amount to around ₹1,167 in additional expenditure. Vehicles consuming more CNG would naturally face a larger increase in their monthly operating costs.

For private car owners, the impact depends on how frequently and how far they drive. Those commuting long distances every day are likely to feel the increase more than occasional drivers.

CNG's Cost Advantage Comes Under Pressure

One of the major reasons motorists choose CNG vehicles is their comparatively economical running cost. The fuel has traditionally been viewed as an attractive alternative for people covering long distances every month.

Repeated price hikes, however, can narrow that advantage.

This does not necessarily mean that CNG becomes more expensive to operate than petrol or diesel, as the actual running cost depends on fuel efficiency, prevailing prices and vehicle performance. Nevertheless, rapidly rising CNG rates can change the calculations for consumers considering which fuel option is most economical.

The latest ₹3.89 CNG price hike represents another addition to the transportation expenses of Delhi-NCR residents. More importantly, it comes after several price revisions within a relatively short period.
