Bank Holidays Next Week: Branches to Shut on Multiple Days; Check Dates Before Planning a Visit

Bank customers planning branch-related work during the last week of August 2026 should check the holiday calendar carefully. Several bank holidays fall between August 24 and August 30, but importantly, not every bank will be closed on the same dates across India. Many of these holidays are state- or region-specific.

Monday, August 24, is a regular working day for banks in most parts of the country, so customers with branch-dependent work may find it convenient to complete it early in the week. Bank closures are scheduled in different regions on August 25, August 26 and August 28 because of festivals and local observances. August 30 is a Sunday, when branches across the country will remain closed.

Meanwhile, Saturday, August 29 will generally be a working Saturday, as it is the fifth Saturday of the month. Under the existing banking schedule, branches are routinely closed only on the second and fourth Saturdays.

Bank Holidays Will Differ From State to State

Bank holidays in India are not always uniform nationwide. Apart from Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays, holidays linked to festivals and regional events depend on the location of the branch.

This means a bank may be closed in one state while remaining fully operational in another on the same day.

Customers should therefore avoid assuming that a festival automatically results in an all-India banking holiday. Checking the holiday calendar for the specific state or city is the safest approach.

August 25: Banks Closed in Some Regions

On Tuesday, August 25, bank holidays are scheduled in selected areas.

According to available holiday calendars, Kerala has holidays connected with First Onam, while Eid-e-Milad-related observances are listed for some regions on either August 25 or August 26 depending on the applicable local calendar.

As the date and local observance can vary, customers should confirm the status of their branch before travelling.

August 26: Bank Closures Across Several States

Wednesday, August 26, is expected to see a wider range of regional banking holidays.

Bank branches are scheduled to remain closed in several states and cities for observances including Milad-un-Nabi, Eid-e-Milad and Onam.

Holiday calendars list closures on August 26 in places including Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and several other regions. Kerala also observes Thiruvonam around this period.

However, the holiday is not applicable everywhere, so branch availability should be checked city-wise.

August 28: Raksha Bandhan to Bring Closures in Several States

Friday, August 28, is another important date for bank customers.

Raksha Bandhan is being observed on this date, and banks are scheduled to remain closed in several states where it is an officially recognised banking holiday.

Holiday lists include closures in states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and some other regions. Rajasthan's August banking calendar, for instance, lists August 28 as a holiday for Raksha Bandhan.

Chhattisgarh has also declared August 28 a bank and treasury holiday for Raksha Bandhan.

Customers should note that Raksha Bandhan does not necessarily mean every bank branch nationwide will be closed.

August 29 Is a Working Saturday for Most Banks

Saturday, August 29, may cause some confusion because many customers associate Saturdays with bank holidays.

However, Indian bank branches are routinely closed only on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. August 29, 2026, is the fifth Saturday, so branches should generally remain open unless a separate local holiday is notified.

August 22 was the fourth Saturday and therefore an all-India bank holiday.

Customers who cannot complete their branch work earlier in the week may therefore get another opportunity on August 29, subject to local holiday notifications and normal branch timings.

August 30: Banks Closed Across India on Sunday

Sunday, August 30, will be a regular weekly holiday for bank branches throughout India.

Customers requiring services that can only be completed at a physical branch should therefore avoid leaving them until Sunday.

Bank Holiday Schedule at a Glance

Date Day Expected Banking Status
August 24 Monday Open in most places
August 25 Tuesday Holiday in selected regions
August 26 Wednesday Holiday in several states
August 27 Thursday Mostly open; some regional exceptions possible
August 28 Friday Holiday in several states for Raksha Bandhan and regional observances
August 29 Saturday Generally open; fifth Saturday
August 30 Sunday Closed across India

The exact holiday list depends on the state, city and applicable banking calendar.

ATMs and Online Banking Will Continue to Work

A bank holiday does not mean all banking services stop.

Customers can generally continue using ATMs, mobile banking, internet banking and UPI even when physical branches are closed. Recent holiday guidance also confirms that digital banking facilities remain available during branch closures.

Services such as balance checks, fund transfers, bill payments and many routine transactions can therefore be completed digitally.

However, customers who need cash deposits involving branch counters, document verification, locker access, certain cheque-related work or other in-person services should plan around the local holiday schedule.

Why Do Bank Holidays Vary Across India?

Banks follow a combination of nationwide weekly closures and holidays applicable under regional calendars.

Sundays are weekly holidays, while the second and fourth Saturdays are also non-working days for regular bank branches. Apart from these, states observe different festivals, religious occasions and regional events.

As a result, the number of bank holidays during a particular week can vary significantly from one state to another.

For example, Rajasthan's August 2026 calendar includes August 25 and August 28 among its listed holidays, while other states may follow different dates.

Check Your Local Calendar Before Visiting a Branch

The final week of August 2026 includes several holidays, but the statement that banks will be closed for four days should not be interpreted as a nationwide four-day shutdown.

Branch closures between August 24 and August 30 depend largely on the location. August 30 is a nationwide Sunday closure, while August 25, 26 and 28 involve different regional holidays. August 29, being the fifth Saturday, is generally a working day.

Customers with important branch-related work should check their bank's local holiday schedule before visiting. Doing so can help avoid an unnecessary trip, particularly during a week when multiple festivals and regional holidays fall close together.
